Things to Consider Buying a microSD Card (class X)

There are a several types of microSD card with different capacity and speed. While buying one we only concerns about the capacity and price. But you will get hurt to know that a microSD card of the cheapest price and highest capacity is the worst one. You should never buy it. Why?

Most of today’s device runs with microSD cards but most of the people doesn’t know a bit about it. Device performance greatly depends on the speed of your external storage. At this time of smartphone mania, one without a good memory card in his device suffers much. You can even use external memory as RAM in Androids. So, speed becomes the main headache. Lets go in detail.

Threre are thee types of microSD cards:microSD_card_speed

  • microSD or microSD SC (standard capacity)
  • microSD HC (high capacity)
  • microSD XC (extended capacity)

But these types denotes more technical phenomenon that I am not going to explain, just mentioned. You can go for your desired capacity just make sure it supports the card type. Most of the device supports microSD & microSD HC.

Now the point to concern about is the speed of the card. You can see there is circled digit printed on card surface. It denotes the speed class. A list of available speed class with their speed is given below.

Class

Minimum performance

Class 2

2 MByte/sec

Class 4

4 MByte/sec

Class 6

6 MByte/sec

Class 10

10 MByte/sec

UHS Speed Grade 1

10 MByte/sec

The speed class denotes the respective number of minimum sustained write speed in Megabyte/sec in a fragmented state. Reading speed certainly remains much higher than write speed. A list of speed class marks on cards is given below.

Class 6

Class 10

UHS Grade 1

Finally the suggestion is while buying a memory card don’t concern only the capacities but also the speed. Card with speed class 6 appears good to me. The higher the better. Don’t buy card without any label; these are worst.
